Frequently Asked Questions

What is a TPD Insurance Claim?

A Total Permanent Disability insurance claim can be made through your superannuation fund if you are permanently unable to continue working your usual job, or any other job you are qualified for, due to illness or injury. Most Australians aren’t aware they can receive this payment, which is often a lump sum on top of your general retirement fund.

To make the claim, it shouldn’t matter what caused the illness or injury and it doesn’t need to be related to your job or claimed through Permanently Disability Work Cover. Simply, if you are too sick or injured to work, you could qualify. This includes (but is not limited to):

  • Loss of a limb
  • Loss of hearing
  • Paraplegia or quadriplegia
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Cancer
  • Motor Neuron Disease
  • Dementia or Alzheimer’s
  • Severe Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Mental Health and psychological injury: depression, PTSD, Bipolar Disorder
  • And many more.

To find out whether you can make the claim, contact your superannuation policy holder – then get in touch with our experienced team members and we’ll get the ball rolling on the paperwork.

Do I need a lawyer for a TPD claim?

Making a Total Permanent Disability (TPD) insurance claim isn’t a simple, five-minute task. You first need to contact your superannuation fund to see if they offer the policy and determine what you need to do in order to make a claim. You’ll need medical records and worker’s compensation claims (if relevant), and you’ll need to be able to answer a range of questions about your health condition.

At this point, you can’t afford to make mistakes. With AJB Stevens, our team of successful lawyers can ensure you have all the right documentation to support your claim, and we can make sure your paperwork is all submitted by the deadline. We’ll provide expert advice and keep you updated on the progress of your claim.

How much will I get in a TPD insurance claim?

The amount you’ll receive for Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) claims varies, depending on your super fund, your age when you stop working and a few other factors. If you have more than one super fund, you may be able to make more than one claim. Most TPD payouts are between $60,000 and $300,000, with a large number at over $200,000. If you have a policy for Total Permanent Disability in Super, you can find your insured benefit amount on your member statement.

Your TPD insurance in Super claims are not considered taxable income; however, you may need to pay a superannuation lump sum withdrawal tax if you’re under 60 years of age. Our team can provide further information about this.

If your TPD claim is approved, you should be able to take this lump sum and your existing superannuation account balance out of your superannuation account at the same time.

We understand every case is different. If you’d like assistance in making a Total Permanent Disability insurance claim, the team at AJB Stevens are here to help make your future a little brighter.
